Joe Hurd has spent the past 20 years building global sales/business development teams and structuring strategic partnerships with consumer-facing internet companies. Currently, he is the SVP, Global Strategy & Business Development at Techstars LLC, one of the world’s largest startup accelerators. Joe also sits on the board of Group plc (LSE: GOCO), a London-listed financial services, utilities and home services comparison website; and the Global Advisory Board of Edelman, the world’s largest privately-held marketing, PR and communications firm. Through The Katama Group LLC, a strategic advisory firm based in Los Altos, CA, Joe works with, advises and invests in consumer-facing advertiser-supported digital media businesses, such as Pactio (paid social local journalism), Cabture (in-cab media platform), and DynoVC (autonomous vehicle technology fund).

Prior to Techstars, Joe held senior executive roles at AOL Time Warner, Friendster, VideoEgg, Gannett, and Facebook. Between 2009 and 2012, Joe spent time in public service as a senior political appointee in the Obama Administration, advising Secretaries of Commerce Locke and Bryson on the National Export Initiative and international trade policy issues. Originally trained as a lawyer, Joe practiced corporate and securities law in London with Linklaters after completing a federal clerkship for Judge William G. Young of the U.S. District Court in Boston, MA.

Joe is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission. Active in his community, Joe serves on the Board of Directors of Bullis Charter School in Los Altos, CA and the American Swiss Foundation, based in New York City. Raised in Wellesley Hills, MA, Joe received a J.D. from Harvard Law School, a masters degree in international affairs from Columbia University, and an A.B. in East Asian Studies and Government with honors from Harvard College. He is a member of the NY, DC (inactive) and MA (inactive) bars, and is a solicitor of the Senior Court of England and Wales. He currently lives in Los Altos, CA with his wife, daughter and two sons.
