Announcing the 2020 Class of the BSH Future Home Accelerator, powered by Techstars

Today I’m thrilled to announce the ten companies joining the BSH Future Home Accelerator, powered by Techstars.

This year, as we extended our program focus to the Future of Home Living and included B2B, we’re very excited to present companies working on a large variety of topics such as co-living, sleep management, cooking, personalized skincare and AI as a service.

With a renewed commitment toward diversity, we are welcoming founders to our 2020 class from more than ten nationalities, with companies coming from seven countries including India, Spain, United States, Turkey, UK, Israel and Canada.

Together with our partner BSH, we’ll spend the next 13 weeks surrounding these founders with mentorship, expert-advice, and cutting-edge practices to help them grow and #domorefaster. But first, we kicked off the program with an amazing founder retreat to get to know each other before entering the thrill of Mentor Madness.

The thriving Munich tech ecosystem has been a great resource in our quest to find the best mentors to support our companies – this year more than 130 mentors will join us, exemplifying the power of #givefirst.

We would like to thank our mentors, sponsors, partners and alumni for their generous support. Special thanks to the team at BSH for their true commitment to the success of our partnership.

The Future Of Living is NOW

The way we live in our homes is changing at a fast pace. From delivery services bringing your grocery at your front door, to new digital products helping you to manage your nutrition, well-being, family organization, wardrobe or to design your future kitchen, our lives are becoming increasingly smarter and efficient, allowing us to become the “CEOs of our lives” have more free time to spend with our beloved ones. New trends are also on the rise, such as co-living, sustainable living, creating new business opportunities for founders. Last but not least, AI and IoT already has its imprint on our lives – from voice assistants to new ways of cooking with smart appliances.

The BSH Future Home Accelerator: What is it and Who is it for?

BSH, Europe’s No. 1 in Home Appliances known for brands such as Bosch, Siemens, Thermador and Neff, partnered with Techstars to create an accelerator specifically targeting entrepreneurs challenging the way we live in our homes.

The BSH Future Home Accelerator is looking for companies building new digital products for the home, new appliances and solutions defying the status quo of how we live, cook, and take care of our loved ones. An accelerator program designed for digital, hardware and B2B solutions as well.

You don’t need to have an IoT product to apply – we love purely digital services. As a matter of fact, our last class featured a recipe platform, a mindful nutrition app and a fulfillment system, reordering your home’s repetitive essentials – among other digital services companies.

This year we are also looking for startups which can improve and digitize core processes of manufacturers like BSH – the leading manufacturer of home appliance in Europe – in production, supply chain management, sales, marketing and customer service experience.

What Founders say About Their Experience

Founders appreciate and value our work. Here is what some are saying about our program:

“The accelerator experience with the Techstars BSH Future Home program was intense, rapid, and provided huge education and growth benefits for our company, our team, and our product. We received compressed years of learning, just in a few months, which would have been impossible for us to accomplish by ourselves. Besides perfect mentoring, active support, and network development, we also became part of a family. The program is a must for innovative and future driven companies which are active in the field of improving life and enriching the experience of the future home.” Harry Novic, CEO of ROCKY.AI

“Amazing community, strong network, a lot of learning.” Csaba Gasparik, CTO of ate

“The mentorship, community and network are amazing. I’ve met amazing Techstars contacts, even after the program, who have been SO incredibly helpful. Exceeded our expectations!” Akshita Iyer, CEO of Inirv

“I was really impressed with the whole program, although I am just getting around to the point where I can start taking advantage of the network (there is a lesson there, I am more than happy to share). I hope the Techstars for Life mantra holds true, and then I will be even more impressed :). Looking forward to the next months, years… both receiving and giving back as I can. #givefirst. Tom Kiss, CEO of ate

“You’re billed as the best business accelerator and informed us that we were one of the chosen few during the first MD presentation. Every part of the programme then ensured that such a group received the highest quality advice and opinion. I am finding the alumni network to be extremely beneficial also.” Thomas Cooper, CEO of Pantri

Johann Romefort Joins Techstars as Managing Director for the BSH Future Home Accelerator

Techstars is launching a mentorship-driven accelerator in Munich: the BSH Future Home Accelerator Powered by Techstars.

The Future Home: My Vision

Imagine the kitchen as the assembly line of your home: there’s a supply chain of products (your groceries), followed by storage (your fridge and cabinets), processing (appliances, but also your own cooking skills and recipes), down to waste management. As we meet entrepreneurs interested in applying to our accelerator program, we will look at startups covering the whole cycle, from home grown food systems, to delivery services, social recipes platforms, and intelligent appliances.

The vision of the Future Home is one that adapts to who we are and what we need—progressively understanding our preferences, looking out for our safety, and taking care of our well being. Andrew Ng declared, “AI is the new electricity.” AI will soon be everywhere in our homes. Coupled with sensor fusion, AI will redefine our habitat experience.

“How Can I Help?”

Today, I’m happy to announce that I’m joining Techstars as Managing Director for the BSH Future Home Accelerator. Techstars’ values align with mine—the #GiveFirst mindset, the importance of mentorship, and the access to a valuable network—and I‘m super excited to get to work.

Not only do I love to provide my insights on product-market fit, technology stack, and scaling—but I also like to share some of the values that were key in building my career. The first question I ask people I meet is: “How can I help?” (#GiveFirst)

So what’s next? As Managing Director for the BSH Future Home Accelerator Powered by Techstars, my mission along with BSH is to find 10 great startups we can accelerate in the coming year. BSH Home Appliances is one of the largest manufacturers of home appliances in the world, and the leader in Europe with global brands like Bosch,Siemens and Gaggenau, as well as local heroes such as Thermador in the U.S.

The 10 companies selected to join the program will have direct feedback and mentorship from a group at the top of its field. Our vision is simple, yet bold: we want to invent the home of the future and create brand new experiences.

The Munich Ecosystem

Building communities is at the heart of what I’ve been doing for the last 10 years. I love to see the magic happen when collisions occur.

As a tech evangelist for the past three years, my mission is to shake up the local ecosystem. Munich has incredible resources, including a vast pool of talent, due to renowned universities and large corporations that fuel the innovation landscape.

Now with Techstars in town, Munich is on the innovation map, and as a managing director my mission will be to accelerate the collisions.

Techstars, with its over 10,000 mentors, investors, and alumni, is a great addition to the Munich startup ecosystem. It will provide the know-how necessary to raise the bar for the whole local startup landscape.

After co-founding Seesmic in 2007, I quickly realised that access to quality mentorship is key for a first time founder. Mentors help you fast-track things and avoid the could-be-deadly mistakes, especially at an early stage of the company. With a firm belief in the power of giving back, I’ve started to get more involved with Munich’s startup hubs to provide mentorship. I’m thrilled that I’ll be able to extend this effort with the power of the Techstars network and by following and helping founders closely, during and after the accelerator program.

Next Steps

My next steps? I’ll be traveling around Europe, Israel, and China in September/October 2018 to meet founders. Add me on LinkedIn and Twitter to stay up to date with news about the program and even meet me in person for office hours or during the Techstars Meet & Greet in one of the following cities: Stockholm, Paris and Berlin (more to be announced). Stay tuned for an upcoming AMA to learn about the program, the startups we are looking for, and some more information about how to apply to the Techstars program.

The applications for the BSH Future Home Accelerator Powered by Techstars are now open and will close on October 14th. Wondering about best practices on how to apply? Check out our application toolkit and apply today.
