Applications are open for the second UnitedHealthcare Accelerator Powered by Techstars! Based in Minneapolis, MN, our 2020 program will run July 13th – October 20th. Are you the founder of an early stage health technology startup? Read on to learn more and see if you are a good fit.
Improving healthcare is an arduous task that requires innovative thinking, deep expertise, resources, and alignment with key stakeholders. Fortunately, the time is now to use technology to disrupt the status quo of our current healthcare systems. Advances in machine learning, big data, and interoperability dovetail nicely with the focus on outcomes accompanying our evolution to value-based care. As such, receptivity to innovation at both health systems and insurers is at an all-time high. When moving beyond the scope of the provider and payor, it is invigorating to see an increased emphasis placed on novel consumer-oriented solutions and the impact they will have in forging the landscape of our future healthcare systems. Simply put, it is a very good time to be a health technology startup founder – a fact that is reflected in the record amount of recent VC investment received by digital health companies.
Through a partnership between UnitedHealthcare and Techstars, our accelerator is helping fuel a digital health revolution. We are dedicated to serving more people – better – everyday, and developing the next generation health system. To this end, we are specifically interested in startups tackling issues that improve health: outcomes, affordability, access, and experiences.
- Outcomes –support healthier people and reduce disease burden
- Affordability – improve health care value
- Access to Care – cover more people, make care easier to receive
- Experiences – to make health care simpler, more transparent and more engaging
Within these broad themes, we are looking for companies that enhance the personalization of healthcare services, companies that reinvent existing care delivery models, and companies implementing behavior science and data science to increase efficacy. Since the overall healthcare landscape is vast, a diverse range of startups will find value in the UnitedHealthcare Accelerator Powered by Techstars. Working to improve chronic disease management? Reinventing population health? Modernizing mental health services? Increasing virtual care capabilities? Addressing medication issues? Simplifying care navigation? Amplifying the impact of health care professionals? In all of these cases, you’re a great fit!
We’re specifically targeting teams who have a working MVP, the internal technical skills to iterate quickly, an extremely strong work ethic, and are excited by the transformative power mentorship can have on their growth. If this sounds familiar, you should:
- Apply to the UnitedHealthcare Accelerator Powered by Techstars
- Attend one of our upcoming AMA’s to learn more about the program
- Meet with the program team during our upcoming office hours to receive feedback on your startup
Applications will be accepted until April 5, 2020. That said, earlier submissions give us more time to learn about you and your company – so don’t wait until the last minute. The future of healthcare is one step closer. Join us!
It’s an exciting moment in the Twin Cities! This week marks the official start of the first UnitedHealthcare Accelerator powered by Techstars. This Minneapolis-based mentorship-driven accelerator is focused on digital health innovation, supported by executive leaders and subject matter experts from UnitedHealthcare along with the Techstars worldwide network. For the next three months, the 10 companies selected for this year’s program will iterate on their business models and accelerate their companies through access to capital and hands-on mentorship.
The current state of health care is ripe for change, giving entrepreneurs many worthy targets to address with new, innovative ideas and solutions. In addition, outdated technology burdens payors, providers, and patients alike. Promisingly, the amount of venture capital dollars raised by healthtech startups continues to reach new heights year over year. Last year’s record of $8.2 billion was spread across 376 different investments. In the first 2 quarters of 2019 VC’s have already backed 180 digital health startups to the tune of $4.2 billion.
Our founding class of 10 companies is focused on using technology to improve access to care, quality of care, cost of care and gaps in care. Combining technical innovation, clinical expertise and evidence-based guidance from UnitedHealthcare with entrepreneurial expertise from Techstars will enable these 10 startups to create a ripple throughout the modern healthcare ecosystem.
Selection for our accelerator began with a brainstorm where key leaders across UnitedHealthcare ideated on today’s most pressing health problems. A target list was created, and the Techstars team went on the road – recruiting and interviewing hundreds of startups from 33 different countries. This pipeline was narrowed down, and the final group of 10 companies emerged.
